Great Indian Developer Summit 2010 – India’s Biggest Polyglot Conference and Workshops for IT Software Professionals
Bangalore, April 9, 2010: The GIDS.Web Conference and Workshops has announced the complete program of over 30 sessions on how browser and rich web technologies such as AJAX, DHTML, Mashups, Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0 technologies, and Rich UI technologies are making money and gaining market-share for some of the leading businesses in the world. The GIDS.Web track at Great Indian Developer Summit takes place 21 and 23 April 2010, at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. To register or for more information visit: www.developersummit.com.
As one of the longest running independent developer conferences in India, GIDS.Web at the Great Indian Developer Summit 2010 is uniquely positioned to provide a blend of practical, pragmatic and immediately applicable knowledge and a glimpse of the future of technology. During 21 and 23 April 2010, GIDS.Web offers a multi-track conference, workshops, expo show floor, and networking opportunities.
The first keynote at GIDS.Web is led by the leading Java EE and Ajax developer, speaker, and author Marty Hall. The best of India’s Java and RIA programmers have learnt the subject from Marty’s seminal books Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages (first and second editions), More Servlets and JavaServer Pages, and Core Web Programming (first and second editions) from Prentice Hall and Sun Microsystems Press. Marty’s keynote address is a comparison of approaches to building rich Internet applications with Ajax.
Marty says Ajax development is difficult, and there are several fundamentally different strategies to building Ajaxified Web applications. The keynote address will survey the three most important of these approaches: using an Ajax-enabled JavaScript library such as jQuery, Prototype, Scriptaculous, Dojo, or Ext/JS; using a Web framework such as JSF 2.0 or Struts 2 that has integrated Ajax support; using the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) to build “pure Java” Ajax applications. The talk will compare and contrast these three approaches, discussing the types of applications that fit best for each option.
Over the course of the summit Marty will conduct several more sessions on “Choosing an Ajax/JavaScript Toolkit: A Comparison of the Most Popular JavaScript Libraries”, “Pure Java Ajax: An Overview of GWT 2.0″, “Integrated Ajax Support in JSF 2.0″ and “Ajax Support in the Prototype JavaScript Library”.
The second keynote by the head of Adobe’s Flash initiative in India, Ramesh Srinivasaraghavan, explores the state of art in web application development and identify trends that could transform the way we create and use web applications. The talk explains how the Adobe Flash Platform has fuelled this revolution with an integrated set of technologies for delivering the most compelling applications, content and video to the widest possible audience. The Director of Forum Nokia will explain how cloud computing coupled with mobile applications enable consumers to have access to powerful services and improved user experiences never before thought possible. IEEE’s 2010 President-Elect Sorel Reisman’s afternoon address steps to improve the IT profession in India.

I ran my first half-marathon yesterday and trained an amazing group of people for the event. These people were overcoming major challenges (blindness, obesity, ridiculous work schedules, cancer) to run the 2009 NYC Half Marathon and for some of them, it was their first race ever!
The experience was amazing for me, and it challenged me and transformed me just as much as it challenged and transformed them. I wanted to share my experience because I think there are a lot of elite fitness professionals out there who will appreciate my story.
Most personal trainers are in great shape so it is easy to forget how hard it can be for people to change their lives, confront their barriers and transform themselves. In the personal training business, you, your body, your personality and your lifestyle are a walking billboard for your business. For better or for worse, people are going to initially make assumptions about your skills and abilities based on how you look. But more important than how you look is how you act, how you communicate, what you know and how you make people feel. A trainer could be blessed with amazing genetics and only know how to push people past their limits and injure them.
Now let’s be clear, I am not saying you shouldn’t care about how you look. I am saying that you should inspire people not only with your looks, but also with your words and actions. That is leadership by example.
And whether you like it or not, your clients are going to look to you for advice on all things health.
- “What did you eat this morning?”
– “How much sleep do I really need?”
– “What do you think about this supplement?
– “Do you take any supplements? Why or why not?”
They look to you for leadership, and like any good leader, you will have a thoughtful and truthful answer for them.
There are many ways to ensure that you can empathize for your clients while leading by example. Put yourself in the client’s shoes. Of course, you could make yourself really fat and then lose weight like that trainer in England, but I think it is best to push and break through whatever barriers and obstacles you already have. We all have them, even if you already look good and feel good, health is not about an absence of disease, but rather vitality. There is always more potential waiting to be realized. There is no need to go out and create more challenges; use the ones you already have:
1. Enter a race you have never done before with your client, and set a realistic goal for yourself and your client.
2. Have other trainers train you. This can be a great way to learn and help you empathize with your client.
3. Learn a new skill or activity and share your experience with your client, or participate in a physical activity that your client admires.
4. Introduce a social element to your clients program (Start a running group, boot camp, etc).
5. Enter a race or competition on your own and tell everyone you know. (You will be very motivated to train your butt off instead of coasting if people know about your event and your goal, and it will inspire your clients tremendously to see you work hard.)
I think Confucius said “A wise man using a bad situation just as much as a good situation”. Or maybe it was Lao Tzu. Is there a client you are working with that you are having trouble motivating? Any of the above could be a great way to inspire them with your actions.
You may have never done any of the above, but that is great. It is an opportunity to get better, hold yourself to a higher standard, and differentiate yourself from other fitness professionals. Yes it can be uncomfortable or anxiety provoking, but that is the point! That is what your client experiences. Confront your “comfortability zone” gradually, so the range of things you are comfortable doing expands, increasing your “sphere of influence”. Just getting outside, in a new environment, or adding a social element (groups, bootcamps, race, etc) can be a great way of expanding your skills and providing a novel experience for the client that can break them out of non-ideal habits and get them inspired.
When your clients see you pushing your limits, it motivates them tremendously!
My Team, Leadership, & My First Half Marathon
I am so proud of our team. I was honored to be the strength coach and work with Jimmy Lynch, our running coach, in preparing our team for the big day. Our team is truly inspirational, they all overcame major challenges (lack of sight, cancer, overweight, over worked, never ran before) to run the NYC half marathon.
Run The Half W/Heidi Team Photo
They are truly inspirational. Dale ran his first half-marathon without the luxury of sight, with help from Bruce his guide. Dale is so low key and relaxed, he was a pleasure to train with, and Bruce went above and beyond the call of duty in supporting Dale. He was there with him every step of the way, they are both people I admire and look up to.
Dale Layne
Bruce Kaitlin
Allison, a cancer survivor, battled through the heat and humidity. She didn’t break her record, but no one did today, and I am proud of her for giving it her best shot. She also learned how to push herself harder, train smarter, and use strength training to compliment her running, so I am excited to see what she will do in the future.
Allison Bewalder
Heather, who had never been athletic or into sports at all, and had never ran much let alone run a race, was able to finish her first half marathon with a smile on her face. AND SHE LIKES RUNNING NOW! That is the tipping point, the beginning of transformation, when exercise goes from something “I should do” to something “I want to do”. I am so proud of her.
Heather Cowan
Quiana accomplished her goal of finishing under 3 hours. She is very impressive, she had to battle a very tough work schedule, but she persisted and trained hard, and finished her first half marathon with tears in her eyes. This is the most common excuse, “I don’t have time”. Well she made the time. Her father had a heart attack when he weighed the same as her, and she was committed to make sure that the same would not happen to her.
Quiana Burns
Jimmy Lynch was our running coach, he is AN AMAZING TRAINER, a master of his craft, and I was honored to work with him and learn from him. The program he provided me was so on point and comprehensive, it really opened my eyes up. I will be even more confident when training my clients for endurance races.
Jimmy Lynch
The fabulous Miss Heidi Jones is one of those rare individuals who oozes intelligence, passion, and sincerity. She really cares about our team and encouraged us day in and day out. I am especially grateful to her for letting me contribute to this group, it has been an amazing and transforming experience for me as well, to a degree which I was not expecting.
Heidi Jones
Mind Over Matter, Soul Before Flesh
Leading our clients to better health requires being fearless! But not in the western sense of the word (meaning without fear) but rather in the zen Buddhist sense of the word, meaning using our focus and discipline to confront and overcome our fears.
For instance, this was my first half-marathon race, and I got food poisoning 6 hours before the race. This is the meal I ate the night before.
(Organic burger, organic broccoli, cup of pasta, and a highly suspect salad)
I threw up every single piece of food in the picture above. GROSS!
I had a right to be upset; I had sacrificed a lot for this race, but I CHOSE not to go there. Not only did I not get ahead of myself and get anxious, but I even embraced the moment while being sick. I was totally keeled over the sink, and in between barfs, sincerely laughing at myself. Funny and weird, right? Laughing at oneself is a great life skill. I confronted my fears and they lost their power over me. I made it to the race on time with 6 hours sleep. Sure, my stomach didn’t feel great, but I just went with the flow and kept my head, cool, calm, and collected.
The Race
My primary goal was to finish the race, without knee pain, and without having to walk. I don’t have any major knee issues, but I didn’t want to start getting any and I have seen way too many runners whose gait looks painful just to watch. It is amazing to see the people that limp across the finish line. Not cool: your joints are more important than anything, including the heart and a race. Lose the use of a knee or a hip and see how easy it is to stimulate your heart with exercise. Still possible, but NOT EASY AT ALL. I was able to avoid any joint issues by increasing my intensity very gradually over the course of 12 weeks, and by mainly training on the dirt paths in Central Park and not on concrete.
My secondary goal was to finish in 1:30 minutes (6:50 min/mile pace). It was way too hot. I doubt any race records were broken today, the humidity was crazy, and it was my first endurance race. My plan had been to pace 7:10 in the park, and then start shaving down my pace 5 seconds every mile that followed. I came out of the gate HOT, all the adrenalin I suppose, and ran the first mile in 6:35. As soon as I realized, I settled back into a 7:25 pace.
I am proud of my accomplishment, and I felt amazing once I crossed the finish line. I finished in the top 10%, not bad for a first timer. The ‘high’ lasted over an hour. It is empowering to break through barriers, particularly ones that are self-imposed. Everyone creates boundaries and limitations on what we think is possible.
WE ALL DO IT.
My thoughts when I started the program were, “Sure, I will give it a shot, but I am no runner”. Well, I am a runner now!!! I got my 1 mile pace down to 5:41 during my training program, a full minute and 10 seconds faster than my record, which I set in grade school when I was “a runner”. Age is nothing but a number baby, you get out of your body what you put into it, and anyone that tells you different is confused.
As you know, your clients have similar thoughts. They tell themselves what they are capable of, what their limits are, what they should be able to do, and what they think they will never be able to do or be.
But it’s just not true, is it? And by leading the way and breaking through your own barriers, you can pave a path for them to do the same.
Thanks to everyone for their support! I am looking forward to more racing, in particular the Empire State Building Run Up in February.
Until next time, keep your business fit.

How to Transform the Fitness Industry One Client at a Time
Our industry, much like our world, is transforming at an accelerated rate.
The fitness industry, as you know, is relatively unregulated, unorganized, and at times even divided. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this dynamic:
• For better or worse, it is relatively easy to become a personal trainer. Standards for personal training and best practices are not well established.
• There are a lot of experts, organizations, and certifications to learn from; this is great, but can make picking the right educational path overwhelming.
• Because of the first 2 facts, the quality, style, integrity, and knowledge of personal trainers vary wildly, affecting our collective credibility and image among the public.
There are signs of more integration and collaboration, which is great, and we can expect to see the whole industry and fitness profession moving in this direction. There is a greater understanding of the preventative power of a healthy lifestyle, and fitness professionals are at the forefront of expanding this awareness. And the world needs preventative health, the fitness profession, and lifestyle information more than ever!
The Association of Elite Fitness Professionals was created to transform the fitness industry. Together, we will hold ourselves and our client’s to higher standards, collaborate and innovate, and help more people take control of their health and fitness.
Our Tribe of Elite Professionals
The Association for Elite Fitness Professionals was created for all fitness professionals (anyone who uses force as a modality to elicit greater health and fitness), including:
• Personal Trainers & Athletic Trainers
• Wellness & Lifestyle Coaches
• Yogis & Massage Therapists
• Group Fitness Instructors & Boot Camp Leaders
As Elite Fitness Professionals, we are committed to the following ideals:
1. Constantly increasing our skills and abilities, to create more value and results for our clients.
2. Holding ourselves and our clients to the highest standard. (Check out the “Client Bill of Rights”).
3. Taking a holistic approach to education that includes consistently increasing our exercise knowledge, interpersonal skills, & business acumen.
4. Comprehensively addressing our client’s health and fitness needs, referring out when necessary, and creating a network of health professionals to support our client’s diverse needs.
5. Utilizing exercise to transform their client’s mind, body and life.
6. Making personal empowerment, self-accountability, and lifestyle change a corner stone of our business model.
The Mission of the Association of Elite Fitness Professionals is to:
1. Collaborate with each other to establish best practices, better integration of knowledge, and push the standards of the fitness industry up.
2. Target specific populations that need our health the most, and work together to find comprehensive solutions (the obese, children, the poor).
3. Create greater communication and integration between fitness professionals and other health professionals (physical therapists, doctors, psychologists, etc.)
4. Transform our cultures understanding of health and disease in relation to fitness and lifestyle, on both a larger scale and one client at a time.
5. Rightfully reclaim (from the medical/pharmaceutical industry) holistic fitness as the best solution for happy, healthy, disease free living.
By committing ourselves to these standards, we know that we can accomplish great things and a higher standard of service for the fitness profession.
Precision, Professionalism, and Skills
In order to overcome the stereotype in the minds of people (the rep counting, skimpy spandex outfit wearing, vane personal trainer), we must uphold ourselves to a high standard and be precise!
When will we be as respected as, say, a surgeon? When we wield our tools (exercise programs and our words) as precisely as a surgeon wields the scalpel.
So how do we become that precise? By increasing our knowledge and skills!
We all know how important education is for our industries credibility, our client’s success, and our career stability. Our client’s come to us looking for leadership; but our job as leaders is to create more leaders, not followers.
The following is an incomplete list of knowledge and skills broken down into 3 categories. Feel free to make some suggestions in the comments and I will add them in. You don’t have to master everything! In fact, that is impossible.
You want to focus on the things you are passionate about and good at, but you need to be aware of and accomplished in the other skills so that you are well rounded. Most gaps in your knowledge can be covered by developing a network of health professionals.
A) Exercise Science
1. Biomechanics
2. Physiology
3. Anatomy
4. Program Design
5. Nutrition
B) Interpersonal Skills
1. Communication Skills
2. Customer Service Skills
3. Psychological/Motivational Skills
4. Leadership Skills
C) Business Skills
1. Marketing Skills
2. Organizational Skills & Systems
3. Sales Skills
4. Professionalism & Policy
5. Entrepreneurial Skills
And if we are going to provide the most value to our clients, we must be passionate about learning and dedicate ourselves to the study of many topics.
“Those who love wisdom must investigate many things.” Heraclitus
Many trainers are uncomfortable with the final skill set, developing business skills, self-promotion, and sales. But these are the very tools that will allow us to help more people, and if we don’t reach them, other average or below average trainers will be getting their message in front of them.
• Providing them with misinformation.
• Creating a cycle of dependence.
• Perpetuating those fitness myths that will just not go away!
So we are in the business of not only empowering our clients and getting them in shape, but also in the business of mass education. And by raising the public’s understanding, they will be better able to make decisions about exercise, and be a lot less likely to train with bad trainers. By raising the bar and pushing the standards up, we can redefine what it means to be a fitness professional
If you are having trouble developing your business skills (sales, self-promotion, marketing, etc), you should check out our “Personal Training Business Software” and join the cut the line list so you can be the first to use it when it comes out.
You may not agree with everything above, and that is totally cool. Not every fitness business should be the same and I would love to hear what you think of these standards, if there is anything you think that is missing, or what you like about the Association of Elite Fitness Professionals and its goals.
Until next time, keep your business fit.

The Tibetans and shamans call them the Hungry Ghosts. We all know them quite wellâtoo well! They are the voices of undoingâthe âsirensâ from Odysseusâ journey who would seduce us off course on our journey homeward. They are the demons who surface when we suddenly awaken in the middle of the night filled with doubts and fears. They are the nagging worries like flies buzzing around our mental bodies looking for sticky places to land. They are powerful and convincing, tempting us into believing that we canât grow, heal, transform, change, or awaken. They feed off our negativity like turkey vultures feeding off dead carcasses. They would devour all of our positive energy if given half a chance. They are on the job twenty-four hours a day, always on the alert for times of vulnerability that create openings in our auric body like invitations to âset up shop,â distributing fearful messages. They are like gnats or black flies so small that even the finest screen mesh canât filter them out of our energetic reality.
We often donât realize we have been bitten by them until the damage is already done. When we awake in the morning depressed and discouragedâthinking that our life is a jokeâthey have left their mark, just as if we were covered with minute bee stings leaving us swollen, toxic and hurting. Perhaps Source created the nasty bites of insects to mirror the energetic impact of the hungry ghosts on our emotional, mental and spiritual bodies.
Some of us try to pretend they are not there. The oblivious innocents merrily go through the woods of life with no bug spray, assuming they are invulnerable to the swarms of energies hungry to dine on the human spiritâdevouring its light as quickly as possible. These people are quickly brought to their knees, undone in their optimism. Here comes the spiritual crisis: âWhat kind of God would create a reality like this? Surely this God does not love us.â The hungry ghosts love this kind of thinking. For them it is food for a week as they whisper to us that we canât possibly know our divinity.
âThe hungry ghosts are particularly activated when we make a conscious commitment to transform or heal an aspect of our souls, especially if our intentions are heightened through ritual. Bringing out the heavy artillery, they are ready to battle our determination to liberate ourselves. Working with the magnetism between the positive and negative poles is required to master duality.
Gathering the positive force needed for self-healing simultaneously activates the opposite pole. This activation sounds an alarm in our energy body as the ghosts close in, ready for the kill. They would destroy our inspiration: âHow ridiculous to think that life could be so good. Who do you think you are to dare to consider enlightenment? Remember the pain that you have suffered? Donât think that it could possibly stop because you are doing some stupid ritual or saying some sniveling prayer. Get real! This is all there is. If you try to make it better it will just get worseâbetter to leave well enough alone. Let your fears make your decisions.â
Intentions to grow heighten vulnerability as we momentarily allow our vision to reflect our true potential, invoking the challenge to let go of our familiar self-limiting parameters. Releasing the known pushes us to the edge of the cliff, teetering on the brink of our faith, daring to believe for one moment that more could be possible. Into this delicate space the hungry ghosts swarm, trying to distract us as they bite at our convictions and visions. If they succeed, we are thrown off balance and fall into the abyss of our illusions. They win, we lose.
âThe Tibetan smiles at my melodrama around the âForces of Undoing.â He challenges me to open to the possibility that the hungry ghosts might have a divine mission. At first all that I can think of is that their only purpose is to make us miserable. Djwhal Khul laughs, reminding me about the two different kinds of faith. The first springs from life filled with joy and opportunity. It is easy to have faith when all is well. The challenge is to hold steady with oneâs faith when life starts throwing major obstacles in our path. The second faith is hard earned through inner strength and persistence. If we can sustain faith when our external reality seems to make a mockery of our ideals, then we are truly rooted in our faith.
Thatâs where the hungry ghosts come inâto tempt, torment, ridicule, and undermine our faith. If we can survive their attacks and remain centered and aligned, we are truly strong in our spiritual body. This spiritual conviction makes it possible for us to allow the physical, emotional and mental bodies to go through whatever intensity is integral to the transformational process.
Ironically, the hungry ghosts are really spiritual coaches in disguise. Just like strict drill sergeants in boot camp, their job is to toughen us up, whether we like it or not. All of our fluff is stripped from us. Although believing we never signed up for this tyranny, deep in our souls we can sense the rightness of the overall process. We cannot possibly bushwhack the cutting edge of our magnitude if our core star (our soulâs center) is not strong enough. Still breathing after an onslaught from the hungry ghosts indicates we are all ready for actionâthe action that sweeps us through the gateway into the fifth dimension. So, let us welcome these messengers of the negative pole as they create the very resistance that propels us into our divine destiny.
As a psychologist I am keenly aware of the alchemical cycle of transformation. Initially when metal is alchemized into gold there is the blackening stage. Emotionally and spiritually the blackening phase demands a journey to the underworld resulting in a dismemberment process. This is not a physical, but a psychic dismemberment. We leave the world of order, certainty and knowing, and fall into the vortex of chaos, not-knowing and fragmentation. This is a necessary part of the alchemical process of breaking down old forms. At this point the hungry ghosts lunge forward, eager to pick apart our certainties as they introduce doubt, disturbance, fear, bewilderment and judgment.
While intellectually I understand all of this, when the hungry ghosts come after me, Iâll run faster than anyone to get away from them. Of course, they always catch me, shrieking in delight at my dismay. As they pull me apart I wail at my predicament, losing all sight of my overall process. Rarely, when particularly centered, I manage to faintly remember that this is a very necessary part of the process. However, it is hard to be comforted by that thought when the experience becomes painful and discouraging. Sometimes I try to block out the process until it is over, struggling to invoke âpsychic anesthesia.â But that doesnât work. We canât sleep through the hungry ghosts. They are just too noisy. They demand interaction. Attempting to push them away just makes them stronger. Surrender is the answerâsurrender with awareness.
Oh how mature we have to be to hold this perspective, allowing ourselves to be momentarily devoured by our karmic past. In the long run itâs easier to be mature than to throw a temper tantrum which only wastes the precious energy needed to survive the alchemical fire. Memories of past skirmishes with these ghostly devils help me to âhang onâ during this process. I have survived and flourished in spite of their history of relentlessness. In my twenties I could not name this process, feeling at the mercy of these potent adversaries. Bringing me to my knees, I would cry, rage and wonder whether life was worth living, thinking that it would always be this bad. I believed every lie the ghosts told me. Caught in a place of inadequacy and failure, I would let them winâpostponingâ my transformation. However, even in those dark nights, the subtle voice of guidance emerged telling me that eventually I would have the strength to go forward, allowing my true self to flourish.
Over time I have learned to recognize the usual insults and criticisms of my personal hungry ghosts. They always say the same thing. This allows me some measure of perspective to keep going. Every time I dare to be more than I have been, the hungry ghosts will immediately spring forth, undermining my positive outlook. I try to remember to breathe. They have never been able to completely take away my breath. Physical movement helps. A moving target is harder for them to attach toâtai chi, chi gong, yoga, walksâwhatever it takes to keep the energy circulating. The more the energy moves, the quicker this process is completed.
âIt helps to remember that birth resides within death, and so too does gold reside within the blackening. Patience is essential. Eventually the clouds part and the sun shines again. Hungry ghosts donât like the sunshine, especially when it radiates out from the soul. I now trust that my natural light will burn away the veils the âghostsâ tell me are real. So, I surrender, ego unwilling, to this spectacular process reminding myself that transformation is possible for all beingsâno, not possibleâprobable. The gold within always emerges victorious.â
